Questions about Indirect Object Pronouns

Q: Why is it Dou-te o livro and NOT Dou-lhe o livro (a ti)?
The indirect object pronoun must agree in person and number:

  • a tite

  • a ele/elalhe

Q: Why is it Ele vendeu-me o computador and NOT Ele vendeu me o computador?
In EP, object pronouns are normally attached to the verb with a hyphen:

  • vendeu-me

👉 Not written separately.

Q: Why is it Quero oferecer-lhe um doce à menina and NOT oferecê-la?
à menina is the indirect object (to whom), so you must use:

  • lhe (indirect)

  • not a (direct)

Q: Why is it Quer emprestar-nos a casa or Quer-nos emprestar a casa, but not Quer nos emprestar?
Pronouns:

  • can go before the conjugated verb (quer-nos emprestar)

  • or attached to the infinitive (emprestar-nos)

👉 They cannot float incorrectly without proper attachment.

🔑 Key point

  • Indirect object pronouns: me, te, lhe, nos, vos, lhes

  • Must agree in person/number (not gender)

  • EP prefers attachment to the verb (enclisis)

  • No Spanish-style accent rules with participles
