Description

An Overview of Adverbs

Adverbs form a broad class of words. You should be familiar with the most common ones and remember that adverbs are invariable: they do not change form according to gender or number, even though they modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.

Common adverbs

Many adverbs of manner are formed by adding the suffix -mente to the feminine form of an adjective:

  • simples → simplesmente

  • leal → lealmente

👉 Adjectives with accents keep the accent:

  • rápido → rapidamente

⚠️ Not all adjectives form natural -mente adverbs (especially physical descriptions or nationalities).

Examples

  • Por fim chegaram à festa.

  • A professora fala rapidamente.

  • Até sabe falar italiano.

  • As crianças brincam demasiado.

  • Já vão chegar.

Intensifiers

Some adverbs modify adjectives/adverbs:

  • muito = very

  • bem = very (colloquial/intensifier)

Examples:

  • Muito cedo começa o concerto.

  • O teu quarto está bem sujo.

Adverbial phrases

Portuguese also uses many fixed expressions:

Examples

  • Fizeram o acordo às escondidas.

  • Construíram a casa à mão.

  • Não gosta de gelado; por outro lado, adora batatas fritas.

  • O cão saiu de repente.

⚠️ Important

  • atualmente = “currently” (not “actually”)

    • “actually” → na verdade / realmente

  • Adverbs do not agree:

    • O livro é extremamente interessante.
