Questions about Interrogation (Portuguese)

Q: Is it Ele quer comer? or Quer ele comer?
Both are possible, but Ele quer comer? is the normal structure. Portuguese generally does not require inversion; inversion (Quer ele…?) is more formal or emphatic.

Q: Why is it Quais queres tu? and NOT Quais tu queres?
In Portuguese, inversion is not obligatory, even with question words. The more natural forms are:

  • Quais queres?

  • Quais é que tu queres?

👉 Quais tu queres? is less natural but not strictly ungrammatical.

Q: Why is it Quais são os teus livros? and NOT Qual são os teus livros?
Qual/quais must agree in number with the noun:

  • Qual é o livro?

  • Quais são os livros?

Q: Why is it Quantas flores compraram? and NOT Quanto flores compraram?
Quanto/a(s) must agree in gender and number:

  • Quantas flores (feminine plural)

  • Quantos livros (masculine plural)

Q: Why is it Qual é a capital de Portugal? and NOT O que é a capital de Portugal?
With ser:

  • qual → asks for specific information (selection)

  • o que → asks for a definition

So:

  • Qual é a capital de Portugal? (specific answer: Lisboa)

  • O que é uma capital? (definition)

🔑 Key point

Unlike Spanish:

  • no obligatory inversion

  • word order is more flexible

  • interrogatives still require agreement and correct choice (qual vs o que)
