Questions about ser and estar

Q: Why is it Sou americano and NOT Estou americano?
Use ser for nationality, since it is part of a person’s identity.

Q: Why is it Estou cansado and NOT Sou cansado to mean “I’m tired”?
Cansado with estar expresses a temporary state (being tired).
Using ser would mean something like “I am a tiring person.”

Q: Why is it O concerto é no estádio and NOT O concerto está no estádio?
Use ser for the location of events.
Use estar for the location of people or objects.

Q: Why is it A gata está morta and NOT A gata é morta?
Estar is always used with morto/a, since it describes a state or result of a change, not an inherent characteristic.

Q: Why is it Sou do Canadá and NOT Estou do Canadá?
Use ser to indicate origin.
Even though estar is used for location, origin is part of identity, so ser is required.
