Questions about Possessive Pronouns

Q: Why is it O livro é meu and NOT O livro é o meu?
In EP, the possessive pronoun usually appears without a determiner after ser:

  • O livro é meu.

👉 O livro é o meu is possible but more emphatic/contrastive.

Q: Why is it Gosto das receitas tuas and NOT Gosto tuas receitas?
When used adjectivally (after the noun), the possessive must come after the noun:

  • as receitas tuas

If used as a pronoun, the noun disappears:

  • Gosto das tuas.

👉 Possessive pronouns do not normally appear before a noun without a determiner.

Q: Why is it Não há dinheiro, mas a senhora pegou no seu and NOT na sua?
Possessive pronouns agree with the noun they replace, not the possessor:

  • dinheiro (masculine singular) → seu

  • not sua

🔑 Key point

  • Agreement = noun replaced, not possessor

  • After ser: usually no determiner (é meu)

  • Adjectival use: after the noun (as receitas tuas)

  • Pronoun use: noun disappears (as tuas)
