Questions about Conjunctions

Q: Why is it pais e filhos and NOT a different form before vowels?
In Portuguese, the conjunction e (“and”) never changes form:

  • pais e filhos

  • Portugal e Itália

👉 Unlike Spanish, there is no alternation (y → e).

Q: Why is it quero vingança ou honra and NOT a different form of “or”?
The conjunction ou (“or”) also never changes:

  • vingança ou honra

👉 Unlike Spanish, there is no alternation (o → u).

Q: Why is it Não fomos ao parque, mas ficámos em casa and NOT a structure like sino que?
Portuguese does not use a direct equivalent of Spanish sino que.

👉 Instead, use:

  • mas (but)

  • mas sim (but rather)

  • sometimes antes (rather)

Examples:

  • Não fomos ao parque, mas ficámos em casa.

  • Não caminhava, mas sim corria.

Q: Why is it Não sabia que ias chegar tão tarde and NOT Não sabia ias chegar tão tarde?
The conjunction que is normally required to link clauses:

  • Não sabia que ias chegar tão tarde.

👉 As in Spanish, que is not usually omitted, even though English often drops “that”.

🔑 Key differences (EP vs Spanish)

  • No alternation: e / ou never change

  • No direct sino que → use mas / mas sim

  • que is generally required to introduce clauses
