Grammar Point: imperfect verb forms
The imperfect is used to describe a past action that took place over a period of time. It describes a past "situation" rather than a past "event", for example,
Quando era pequeno, adorava cavalos ("When I was young, I really loved horses").
Verbs ending in -
ar (like
falar), form their imperfect by adding -
ava, -
avas, etc. (e.g.:
Fablava = "I was speaking"). Verbs in -
er or -
ir form their imperfect by adding -
ia, -
ias, etc. (e.g.:
Facía = "I was doing ..."). Some verbs, like
ser, ("to be") have irregular imperfect endings. You can learn more about the imperfect
here.
